Get Your Mojo on
Great fun last night having Lauren back in the hot seat (and no orange beard hairs to be found in her mic so all good) and treated to a visit from Jeremy and Lauren of local band Cooper Black (also a heavily weighted, old style serif typeface designed by Oswald Bruce Cooper in 1921). Good times. Lauren went home with the playlist but we heard from the 27 Club- Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrsion, Curt Cobain and the equally talented and tragic losses of Otis Redding, Nick Drake and Tim Buckley of the almost 27 Club. This is one of the only photographs of RJ:
We then decided to feature some live and kicking young Australian musicians- Sietta, The Belle-Phonics and Ballarat band The Indian Skies who will be joining us in the studio soon! Oh and how could I forget Beyonce.
Other stuff:
When I came home to enjoy the sounds of Off the Tracks I was delighted to be treated to the sounds of the ‘queen of New Orleans soul’ who I had never heard of!! Irma Thomas- she’s fab and after 50 years of performing she’s still at it- doing a gig at The Corner Hotel on April 20th. I wanna go!
Jeremy of Cooper Black also runs Left of Elephant Recording Studio and is offering a free day’s recording to artists- such a great opportunity, get int touch! jeremy@leftofelephantsound.com.au
And just a brief note on my trip to Rediscovery yesterday, proud sponsors of Voice Fm! yes that could be you too, get in touch if interested. Anywho it is surely one of life’s pleasures to have time to wander through a book or music store (combined with being free of the need to go to the toilet!) with no particular purpose in mind and come away with some treasures.
I picked up Ballarat band Young Werther’s 2007 album Treasure- a beautiful collection of songs featuring Mick Young’s smooth vocals and evocative lyrics and even a soaring choir on the track The Sun is a Merry Go Round. Look out for Young Werther’s work as part of the ABCOpen WxSW film clip project.
I also grabbed a couple of the indispensable Mojo compilations Lauren and I are always banging on about- Southern Soul and the Who picks their favourite stuff. Thanks guys and if you have time for strolling through their collection of cds and records I highly recommend, and don’t forget to visit my fave second hand bookshop/cafe a few doors down at The Known World- treasures await!
See y’all next week for the full live show celebrating birthdays and Voice Fm and all things good really. x
PS- New albums from Radiohead and PJ Harvey- very exciting. Will be giving them a spin for you soon.
