Humour, Humility & Damn Good Music: Lisa Miller and the Dead Salesmen at the Palais
If the musicianship of the Dead Salesmen duo isn’t enough, these guys are worth seeing just for Hap Haywood’s pre-song banter- like talking about an early review describing their song as “flat vocals, cliched lyrics and crap guitar.” Gotta love ‘em. Why they never made it big remains a mystery to us all but it does mean we get to enjoy their signature down-to-earth and moving music in these intimate venues. ‘Shoe’ and ‘Wendouree’ were crowd favourites…
Lisa Miller and band (the awesome Shane O’Mara on geetar, Ashley Davies on drums and niece Loretta on backup vocals -also a Bangin Rackette!) then graced the stage with an eclectic mix, complete with more gold on stage banter- including referring to her niece’s ‘front box’ and invoking the image of our friend Lee driving the whole audience home in an oversized bus!
They opened with Dylan’s ‘It Aint Me Babe’ and also treated us to a rocking ‘Maggie’s Farm’ that got the dancers up! A delight of originals and covers inbetween ranged from Neil Young to Curtis Mayfield and even a tribute to Amy Winehouse- all showcasing these top musicians, clearly born to entertain (& deserving of multiple Arias!) Thanks for a great night of humour, humility and music, in the lovely Palais surrounds : )
Listen in to some of our interview with Lisa here:

Josephine Rowe (an old Strange News reading)
Josephine Rowe reads Maps on the Tinderbox (2010)
Josephine is a “Melbourne-based writer with a penchant for old typewriters, broken timepieces and bookshop smell. Other people tend to do a better job of describing my work, and the small interior moments of marginalised characters is probably the best summarisation I’ve heard.” She is amazing and we wish her well on her current adventures all the way in Iowa- for the 2011 International Writing Program, exciting! Check out her beautiful work here
